Baopu·FELT is a nonprofit art space based in Kaili, Guizhou, centered on artist residencies, research, exhibitions, and publishing. It is dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary artistic practices rooted in the folk cultures, intangible heritage, and local ecologies of Southwest China.

Thematic Season:  The Shape of Language

“The Shape of Language” Thematic Season examines the diverse writing systems and linguistic practices of Southwest China. In this region, language has been preserved not only through script but also through sound and performance. Ancient forms such as Yi, Dai, Shuishu, and Dongba coexist with localized adaptations of Chinese characters and Miao songs—oral traditions that transmit memory and belief through voice.

Practitioners are invited to draw from fieldwork and cultural research, exploring language as text, rhythm, sound, symbol, and material. Through artistic creation and curatorial research, the season reflects on how these traditions may find renewed relevance within contemporary art.

本期驻留以“语言的形状”为主题，聚焦中国西南多民族文化中的文字系统、书写载体与语言实践，邀请创作者基于在地田野与文化研究，展开创作和策展实验。

在文字并非普遍媒介的历史中，西南地区的语言传统以独特形式延续和演化，既包括彝文、傣文、水书、东巴文等古老民族文字，也涵盖拼音文字、汉字系统的本地适用变体，及“苗歌”这类以声音传承记忆与信仰的“说话的文字”。本驻留项目鼓励参与者深入这些语言与书写的地方形态，思考文字作为身份、历史与文化连续性的载体，如何在当代艺术语境中被重新激活。

DRAGONS IN MY HEART: A CO-CREATION LAB
见龙在心：龙纹共创实验坊


This workshop is curated by Yubing Guo during her stay at the Baopu Residency. It explores the manifestation, transmission, and evolution of dragon patterns—a unique cultural symbol in the traditional Chinese context—within the cultures of southwestern ethnic minorities, and their contemporaneity. This project presents a comprehensive view through traditional dragon-patterned attire from various eras, academic research, multi-perspective interview videos, and interactive offline workshops.


本期实验坊由策展人国瑜冰在抱朴驻地期间策划。该项目意在探索龙纹这一传统中国语境下的特殊文化符号在西南少数民族文化中的体现、流传、和变化，以及如今启发出的当代性。实验坊以不同年代龙纹的传统服饰展品、学术调研、多视角采访影像、以及线下互动workshop的形式综合呈现。

Yubing Guo: "I'm Not Sure if the Cattle Can Easily Adapt to Diesel" - BLUEPRINT Exhibition Review

国瑜冰：“我不确定牛是否能轻易适应柴油机” ——《蓝图》展评


In early June, at the beginning of midsummer, an exhibition titled "Blueprint" by the artist Jiang Jiang opened at the Baopu Space in Kaili, the capital of southeastern Guizhou. This exhibition explores the dissonance and interweaving between cultural loss and technological advancement.

The air is always filled with moisture, and the windows of the exhibition hall reveal the grey walls of the courtyard. Green moss spots the bricks, and banana trees along with unidentified climbing plants fill the black window frames. The atmosphere is stuffy, humid, and low-pressure, with leaky pipes, cool beer, and a faintly restless mood. The subtropical monsoon climate evokes a sense of nostalgia that is hard to distinguish between reality and illusion.

六月仲夏伊始，黔东南首府凯里，艺术家姜姜题为“蓝图”的个展在抱朴空间开幕，探索着文化失落与技术进步之间的错位与交织。空气中总是水汽袅袅，展厅的几扇窗户透出灰蒙蒙的院墙，绿色苔藓斑驳了砖石，芭蕉伴着叫不上名字的爬藤植物，填充着黑色的窗框。闷热，潮湿，低气压，拧不紧的水管，凉涔涔的啤酒，隐隐躁动的心绪，亚热带的湿润季风气侯唤起怀旧情绪，说不清其中有几分真假。
