About

Baopu·FELT is an independent, nonprofit art space based in Kaili, Guizhou, dedicated to artist residencies and research, exhibitions, and publishing. It aims to foster interdisciplinary artistic practices rooted in the folk cultures, intangible heritage, and local ecologies of Southwest China.

We focus on the contemporary expression and reproduction of vernacular knowledge systems and traditional craft techniques. By supporting collaborations between artists, curators, researchers, and local communities, we encourage long-term fieldwork and engagements that involve craft practices, historical materials, and cultural ecologies, seeking new possibilities for articulating local cultures in the present.

Baopu·FELT organizes residency and exhibition programs through both open calls and curated invitations. Residents receive time, space, and resources for creative work and research, and are encouraged to engage deeply with the cultural context of Guizhou through experimental and site-responsive practices.

The space is repurposed from the former Kaili Health School and offers 300 square meters for exhibitions and creative production. Our archive houses over 100,000 items of folk art from the late Qing dynasty to the late 20th century—including vintage clothing, ethnic costumes, embroidery, textiles, and household artifacts. We also maintain long-term partnerships with local craft workshops, supporting in-depth explorations of techniques such as batik, traditional papermaking, embroidery, and hand-weaving.

Taking advantage of Kaili’s position as a cultural crossroads of multiple ethnic groups, we have established a stable fieldwork network that enables residents to engage with diverse communities, uncovering the contemporary potential of rural and township cultures.

We raise critical questions, including (but not limited to):

    •    How can we move beyond exoticizing gazes and the renewed extraction of tradition, toward meaningful co-creation?
    •    In interdisciplinary collaboration, how can we remain vigilant against—and surpass—the “tame-and-colonize” mechanisms tied to capitalist logics?
    •    How might ethnographic methods in contemporary art go beyond the paradigms of archive, documentation, and representation?
    •    When intangible heritage becomes decontextualized as a museological object, how can it still be activated in contemporary life?

Baopu·FELT sees the “Southwest” as a methodological site, responding to global turns in contemporary art through situated knowledge systems, and exploring a de-westernized path of cultural practice.

Our Content

Centered on artist residencies and exhibitions, Baopu·FELT also engages in publishing, podcasting, and other diverse formats to share creative and research outcomes. By doing so, we actively connect with a broader network of thinkers and practitioners, expanding the boundaries of knowledge production and cultural exchange.

Our publishing and podcast platforms not only document the work of resident artists and researchers, but also invite external guests to join ongoing conversations. These dialogues revolve around fieldwork methodologies, craft-based experiences, local knowledge systems, and their contemporary articulations—forming a continuously evolving intellectual network that responds to the shifting dynamics of the present.

At the same time, Baopu·FELT is developing the first online archive in China dedicated to Guizhou’s folk crafts and vernacular objects. Thousands of rare items are being systematically catalogued, accompanied by a series of publications. This effort aims to activate local cultural resources as public knowledge and provide entry points for in-depth research and creative practice across disciplines.
