Statement
Bang Bang’s childhood was steeped in the sounds and odors of the slaughterhouse: the dull thud of blades sinking into flesh, conveyor belts carrying languid carcasses, her mother’s Buddhist sutras for the dead blaring over machinery’s roar—a dissonant symphony of modern survival. Yet during the Guizhou Miao people’s Guzang Festival, she witnessed ritualized slaughter transfigured: in their thirteen-year ancestral rites, death wove itself into mythic tapestries, blood became hieroglyphs bridging mortals and deities, suspended ox heads turned into sacred glyphs. The intersection of the two realities ignited a haunting inquiry—when humans confront life and death through divergent prisms, does killing manifest as crude violence or sacred inevitability?
Once a photographer sculpting fantasies of corporeal desire for fashion’s glittering machine, Bang Bang now navigates realms where body intersects with the divine—a shift not merely in artistic direction, but a profound meditation on sacrifice, faith, and modes of existence. Her solo exhibition Nowhere marks this metamorphosis. Through experimental hybrids of photography, video, and installation, she dissects the tangled arteries connecting sacrifice, faith, and industrialized carnage. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork and archival records, she reimagines ritualistic imagery through fictional narratives, ultimately sketching a speculative vision of future ceremonial landscapes.
The exhibition’s title, Nowhere, dissolves boundaries between tangible and mythic. Bang Bang mixes tribal embroideries with cyberpunk aesthetics, reconfigures sacrificial bridges and cave burials through AI-generated dreamscapes, juxtaposes temple incense with slaughterhouse disinfectant. Her lens wears romance like a subversive mask: beneath ceremonial splendor lurks power dynamics (who assigns “value” to sacrificial lives?), while beneath clinical meat-packing plants hums existential silence (who consumes these anonymized bodies?). Seemingly disparate acts of killing mirror each other as fractured reflections of civilization’s disquiet.
The exhibition pulsates with visceral paradoxes: humanity ritualizes death to exorcise chaos, yet reduces living beings to spreadsheet integers to sustain modernity’s illusions. A child of slaughterhouses, Bang Bang dissects society’s numbed pain receptors; a veteran image-merchant, she betrays consumerism’s saccharine visual lexicon. This confrontational narrative challenges not merely how we see, but compels reckoning with civilization’s unspoken contracts—how faith sanctifies violence, how ritual masks complicity. Her camera lingers in liminal spaces: when Buddhist chants overlay killing floors, when Miao drum skins glisten with sacrificial blood, might slaughter and redemption share clandestine kinship?
Nowhere transcends mortality’s theater to map humanity’s spiritual cartographies. This migration from fashion to art constitutes an autopsy of lived experience: supermarket vacuum-sealed steaks, viral environmental hashtags, ecstatic ritual dances, temple incense coils—each rebranded fragment of existence coalesces into new cosmologies. We are all citizens of this Nowhereland.

About the Artist
Bangbang is a photographer who currently resides in Hangzhou. In 2014, she founded "Bangbang Studio" and has since collaborated with numerous prestigious brands both nationally and internationally.
Raised with a background in traditional Chinese painting, she later shifted her focus to oil painting and is now engaged in photography. For Bangbang, the immediacy and covert temporality conveyed by the medium hold more appeal than the process of layering. Influenced by Meng Jinghui's "Rhinoceros in Love," her photographic work attempts to create a theatrical sensory experience in a flat medium, using changes in lighting and environment to create drama and capture the subtle tension between the complexity and authenticity, serenity and turbulence of individuals.
Bangbang's work consistently addresses women's issues, but she maintains a dialectical stance on presenting specific viewpoints through frameworks. Her creative interests are focused on the portrayal of women in religious beliefs and historical conflicts, as she believes in the inherent mystery and power that women embody. In her work, she also excels at crafting androgynous female figures. The representation and significance of androgyny are in a state of flux, ranging from classical mythology to medicine, and extending into literature, sexology, psychoanalysis, sociology, and feminism, varying according to its function within specific contexts. By blending and reinterpreting female imagery and narratives, Bangbang uses photography to respond to Judith Butler's concepts of performativity and gender nonconformity—it can manifest as a perception, a pathology, a symptom of suppressed desire, a generalized sexual embodiment, or perhaps a positive fantasy of the harmonious coexistence of masculine and feminine traits within a single entity.
