Language in Action: A Peer Learning Retreat is an interdisciplinary, approximately week-long research programme that brings together artists and researchers working across art, design, curating, writing, and other cultural fields, with a particular interest in regional knowledge, anthropology, and fieldwork methodologies. As an ongoing practice-based research unit developed by Baopu·FELT within each thematic season, the programme runs alongside the residency programme and exhibitions. Centered on thematic discussion, methodological exploration, and relationship-building, it aims to create an open and supportive space for research and exchange beyond the residency and exhibition contexts.
Over the course of approximately one week, the programme will take the form of lectures, panel discussions, internal screenings, local walks, discussions, and responses. These exchanges will extend beyond the residency and the Southwest region itself, creating opportunities for regional and methodological comparison, ongoing dialogue, and the accumulation of shared knowledge among a broader community of peers. We hope that this short but intensive period of co-living can serve as a starting point for gradually building more resilient networks of exchange across regions and contexts.
This edition of Language in Action: A Peer Learning Retreat is part of “The Shape of Language,” a thematic season initiated by Baopu·FELT in 2025. The season focuses on writing systems, writing materials, and language practices within the multi-ethnic cultures of Southwest China, encouraging cross-media practices and exchanges grounded in fieldwork and cultural research.
This edition focuses on the processes of transformation between language, text, and the body as they move across contexts, and understands translation and translational practices in a broad sense as forms of subjective action. Within cross-cultural and postcolonial contexts, translation can bring about shifts in meaning and misreadings, while also constituting an important condition through which culture can circulate and continue. Every act of translation involves the reconstruction of context, the selection of meaning, and the redistribution of value, rather than merely a linguistic conversion. At the intersection of artistic practice, anthropological methods, and field research, researchers and presenters often occupy multiple positions simultaneously—as translators, the translated, and those who are mistranslated—while continually negotiating their modes of expression and positions of subjectivity across different fields of circulation.
“Language as Action” therefore points to a practice of knowledge production centered on relationship-building and methodological reflection. Taking language and translation as its points of departure, the programme invites participants to respond to the following questions through their own practices and research:
- What forms of phonetic recording, translation, and cross-media transformation exist in everyday life and professional practice? For example, from oral accounts, sound, and ritual to archives, or from text to visual media.
- What forms of local language action, practice, and modes of expression already exist within the fields we observe and intervene in?
- What does local knowledge become when it is “translated” into artistic expression? Who is it translated for, how is it translated, and where does it flow?
- What kinds of limitations and value orientations are embedded within language systems and language-based tools, such as “emotion wheels”?
- What new forms of expression might emerge within the gaps of “aphasia”? How can the untranslatable, the opaque, the refusal of visibility, or the deliberate act of self-translation become strategies?
- Beyond verbal language, how can we listen to and perceive forms of communication that exceed human language, including non-verbal and more-than-verbal forms?
- Beyond functioning as metaphors, what other forms of action and methodology can the concepts of language and translation generate?
- How can the circulation of meaning and processes of translation avoid becoming forms of cultural extraction from the local, and instead develop into long-term, relational forms of engagement?
